XC Spikes vs. Track Spikes

Know the difference.

When it comes to running, there are different types of spikes designed for different types of surfaces. Here, we will be discussing the difference between XC spikes and track spikes.


The first thing to know about track spikes is that they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are spikes for sprints, middle-distance, and long-distance running, as well as for jumping and throwing. The most important thing is to choose the right spikes for your event.


XC spikes are designed for running on cross country terrain such as grass, mud, and soft dirt. They have rubber outsoles, and are generally very flexible. They typically contain spikes 3/8″ in length, but in muddy or slippery conditions, 1/2″ or even 5/8″ length spikes may be used. 

Track spikes, on the other hand, are designed for running specifically on the track. There are a variety of fits/stiffnesses depending on which event(s) you are competing in. For example, a sprint spike is very stiff, generally they are not meant to flex when competing for maximal energy transfer into the ground. A distance oriented track spike will be more flexible due to the fact that they will be worn for a longer period of time versus the sprint spike. They typically have spikes that are 1/4″ in length. Throwing shoes do not have spikes due to the nature of the event. They are made to glide or rotate more easily than a training shoe. 


Both track and XC spikes, are designed to enhance the performances of athletes. This is done by choosing specific elements of each and every event and focusing on developing a spike that takes advantage of what may or may not be needed in the spike for optimal performance.
